A Brief History of Hummus
Hummus, derived from the Arabic word for “chickpeas,” has a rich history that spans centuries. It’s believed to have originated in the Middle East, with its earliest records dating back to ancient Egypt. Back then, it was a simple blend of chickpeas, tahini (a paste made from sesame seeds), olive oil, and various spices. Over the years, hummus evolved and spread across the Mediterranean, becoming a staple in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines.

Key Ingredients You Need to Make Classic Hummus
- Chickpeas: These legumes are the heart and soul of hummus. They provide the creamy texture and nutty flavour that make hummus so irresistible. Chickpeas are also a great source of protein and fibre, making hummus a nutritious choice.
- Tahini: Adds richness and depth to hummus. It’s made by grinding sesame seeds into a smooth paste and has a slightly nutty and bitter flavour. The combination of tahini and chickpeas creates a harmonious balance of flavours.
- Extra-virgin olive oil: Not only enhances the taste but also contributes to the creaminess of hummus. It’s also packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
- Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice provides a zesty, citrusy kick that brightens up the dip and balances the richness of the other ingredients.
- Garlic: A couple of cloves of garlic add a pleasant pungency and depth of flavour to hummus. Adjust the quantity to suit your taste.
- Water: Often used to thin hummus and get it to your desired consistency.
- Spices and Seasonings: Common additions include cumin, paprika, and salt, which infuse hummus with a delightful blend of savoury and smoky flavours.
Versatility of Classic Hummus
Classic Hummus is a versatile dip that can be enjoyed in numerous ways:
- Dipping: The classic use of hummus is as a dip. It pairs wonderfully with fresh vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers. Pita bread, tortilla chips, and even pretzels also make excellent hummus companions.
- Sandwich Spread: Swap out mayonnaise or mustard for hummus in your sandwiches and wraps. It adds creaminess and flavour while boosting the nutritional value.
- Salad Dressing: Thin out hummus with a bit of water or lemon juice to create a creamy salad dressing. It’s a fantastic alternative to traditional dressings.
- Marinade: Hummus can also be used as a marinade for chicken, fish, or tofu. It imparts flavour and helps keep the protein moist during cooking.
