When I was younger, I used to love drinking beer. As I have gotten older, I find it too heavy. I no longer enjoy drinking it. I thought my beer drinking career was over. Then, a couple of months ago, I went to Mexico on a holiday. I met the Chelada and now beer and I are mates again.
What is a Chelada?
The Chelada is the perfect mix when you want the taste of a cocktail without the high alcohol content. Its salt and lime juice is reminiscent of a Margarita. Paired with beer, it’s much lighter and very refreshing.

The Chelada is from Mexico, where it has been enjoyed for generations. Ingenious bartenders and beer aficionados are often credited with its creation. They sought to create a drink that complements the crispness of beer with a burst of flavour. The exact origin of the Chelada is debated. One thing is clear: this refreshing drink has stood the test of time.
What ingredients do you need to make a Chelada?
A traditional Chelada is delightfully uncomplicated, relying on a few key ingredients:
- Beer: The heart of any Chelada is, of course, beer. Mexicans typically use light lagers, such as Corona or Modelo. You can experiment with different beer styles to suit your taste.
- Fresh Lime Juice: The tangy, citrusy kick of fresh lime juice is a defining characteristic of the Chelada. Squeezing a wedge of lime into your drink provides a burst of flavor and acidity.
- Salt: A salted rim or a pinch of salt in your Chelada enhances the flavour. It also adds a pleasant, savoury contrast to the lime.
Variations
While the classic Chelada is a delightful drink on its own, there are numerous variations to explore:
- Michelada: Add hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and spices like chili powder or black pepper for a spicier twist.
- Clamato Chelada: Substitute tomato-clam juice (Clamato) for the lime juice to create a unique savory-sweet flavor profile.
- Fruit Infusions: Experiment with different fruit juices like mango, pineapple, or grapefruit for a fruity Chelada twist.
What food you should eat when drinking the refreshing Chelada?
A Chelada, with its crisp lager, fresh lime, and salted rim, is the perfect match for bold, zesty Mexican flavours. Its refreshing tartness balances rich, savoury dishes. These include Versatile Mexican Shredded Beef. It pairs well whether stuffed into tacos, rolled into burritos, or scattered over nachos. The Chelada’s bright acidity also complements Prawn and Scallop Aguachile Tostadas, enhancing the seafood’s fresh, citrusy heat. It’s equally at home alongside The Perfect Fish Tacos, where its effervescence lifts the crispy, golden batter. No Mexican feast is complete without Pico de Gallo and Guacamole. Both are bursting with fresh flavours. The light, citrusy Chelada enhances these flavours sip after sip. Whether enjoying a seafood tostada or a beef taco, this refreshing beer is the perfect pairing.

Final thoughts
With just a few readily available ingredients, you can create a refreshing and flavourful drink. It’s perfect for a sunny day. Enjoy it at a backyard barbecue. Or simply unwind after a long week. The next time you reach for a cold beer, try giving it a Mexican twist. Whip up a Chelada. It might just become your new favourite go-to beverage. Salud!

Chelada
Ingredients
- 360 ml bottle of cold beer
- 1-2 fresh limes
- Salt
Instructions
- Begin by chilling your beer until it’s ice-cold. A frosty beer will make your Chelada even more refreshing.
- Take a lime wedge and run it around the rim of your glass. This will moisten the rim.
- Pour a thin layer of salt onto a plate. Turn the glass upside down and press the moistened rim into the salt, coating it evenly. This step is optional but adds a delightful salty kick to your Chelada.
- Squeeze the juice from the limes into the glass, using as much or as little as you like. Remember that lime juice is the primary flavor enhancer in this drink, so feel free to adjust to your taste.
- Slowly pour the cold beer into the glass. Pouring it gently helps to mix the lime juice and beer without excessive foaming.
- Give it a gentle stir with a long spoon to combine the lime juice and beer.
- Add ice if desired, and garnish with a lime wedge.

What a great idea to use beer !
Love it 👏💕
